Information on Voter ID

Following new legislation, residents will be required to show photographic ID when voting in a polling station. This will come into effect for the Thursday 4 May 2023 elections.

You must show one of the accepted photographic identification documents to polling station staff and be registered on the electoral register to be issued a ballot paper.

Any of the following ID is acceptable.

Passport: Passports issued by the UK, the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or a Commonwealth country
Driving License: UK driving license (full or provisional), a driving licence issued by the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Isle of Man or any of the Channel Islands
Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
PASS identity card: Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram required
Defence Identity Card Ministry of Defence Form 90
Blue badge: A badge of a form prescribed under section 21 of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970 or section 14 of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons (Northern Ireland) Act 1978 (blue badge scheme)
A national identity card issued by the EU, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein
• Any of the following concessionary travel passes funded by the UK Government:
o Older Person's Bus Pass
o Disabled Person's Bus Pass
o Oyster 60+ Card
o Freedom Pass
• A Voter Authority Certificate – issued to those without ID.

Please note expired ID is acceptable if the photograph remains good likeness to you.

Voter Authority Certificate: If you do not have one of the accepted forms of ID, you can apply for a free Voter authority Certificate. This is an A4 paper-baseddocument that contains your photograph and name. You do not need to apply if you already have one of the accepted IDs. The deadline to apply is 5pm Tuesday 25 April 2023 for the elections on Thursday 4 May 2023.

Postal voters: You do not need photographic ID if you vote by post.

Proxy voters: You do not need photographic ID to nominate a proxy. However, if your proxy is voting in the polling station for you, they must provide ID for themselves.
