Walk 5

The Wyeford Walk

via Wyeford, Charter Alley and Browning Hill

For permission to use St Stephen’s Church car park, please contact the Churchwarden.

Approximate time 4.5 miles, 3 hours

Map Reference: 582 599 at start of walk

Start at St Stephen’s church car park, Baughurst.  Walk up the hill from the church, past the church gate, and then left through the gate by the fingerpost into the churchyard, keeping the church on your left.  Walk along Church Path, and at the bottom of the path turn right and, keeping the road on your left, walk along the gravelled, and then grassy footpath, through a woodland strip parallel to the road, to ‘The Wellington Arms’ pub www.thewellingtonarms.com.  Travel along the highway for a further 100m, to a field entrance on the right, and follow the footpath signposted to the right.

Take the kissing gate into the field, following the footpath along the right side of the field.  Go through another kissing gate, and through the left metal gate and go straight across the next field, and through a gateway.  Keeping field hedge ahead of you on the right, walk along to the corner by the road, then over stile into Rimes Lane.  Turn right along road; at the T-junction turn right onto Church Brook; following the road until a T-junction.  Turn right onto Church Road, uphill past St Peter’s Church, Tadley, and cemetery on right.

Continue along the road and keep going up the hill to the sharp right bend, take the bridleway in front (no signs), at the side of No 23 Church Road.  At bottom of the track turn left through a white gate, (ignoring the footpath straight ahead), follow path through the wood, keeping field on the left, to white gate.   Bear right on wide track leading between houses, with The Moat House on the right.  Just beyond The Moat House turn right, and keep walking to white gate with way marker, directly ahead (ignoring two earlier white gates on the left).

To visit the pub, take this option:

Turn left immediately in front of this gate (the way marker sign is on other side of post).  Carry on along woodland track between hedgerows, later passing under power cables, to gravel track and straight on to road, turn right up road to crossroads.  Turn right, down Old Chapel Lane and then left into White Hart Lane, and ‘The White Hart’ public house on left.  www.whitehartcharteralley.com.  From pub turn right, then immediately left along Deans Lane.

Bear right and keep going to Witch Lane Farm sign (ignoring the first footpath sign on the right) and footpath sign on the right.  Turn right through open green gates straight ahead, keep straight with woods on right, keeping small business park on the left.  Through green gate, keep straight on for about ½ mile, through kissing gate on right of gate and go straight ahead.  You are now back on the path you walked earlier.

At Church Road turn left.  Keep on road past thatched barn on left.  Round right-handed bend, footpath concealed on right.  Follow footpath signs, through wood, over stile across field, keeping wood on the right to fence.  Over stile, along path over bridge, follow waymarking signs, then over bridge and stile, waymarking signs.  Walk across grass bearing right and across gravelled drive, bearing right over bridge, to wooden gate beyond the pond, which lies on your left.  Follow waymarking signs across field, keeping hedge on your left.  Halfway up this field turn left through kissing gate, waymarking sign, down concrete drive to St Stephen’s church, Browning Hill.
